Late Goal Propels SMU to 2-1 Victory
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (SMU) – Sophomore midfielder Blair Thorpe scored the game-winning goal in the 77th minute to propel the SMU women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Indiana Monday afternoon at Bill Armstrong Stadium. Following the Match, Thorpe, a Frisco, Texas, native, was named to the All-Tournament team. The Mustangs improve to 3-1-0, while the Hoosiers fall to 2-3-1.
"I thought we played well and we battled really hard," SMU head coach Chris Petrucelli said. "From being a goal down, to coming back, we fought hard and it just shows the character of our players."
From 20 yards out, Thorpe fired a bending shot over the head of starting Hoosier goalkeeper, Sarah L'hommedieu, and into the upper-left corner to give SMU a 2-1 advantage. Thorpe now has two goals this season.
"It was a quality goal by a talented player," Petrucelli noted about Thorpe's goal. "We have been encouraging her to be more aggressive on the attack because she is a more than capable goal scorer, and that's what she did today."
Trailing 1-0 after Indiana scored in the 11th minute, junior midfielder Claire Oates recorded the equalizer in the 39th minute, heading a free kick from Haley Thompson passed L'hommedieu, from six yards out. The goal is Oates' second of the season and 12th of her career. Thompson, a sophomore defender, now has two assists this season and three in her career.
The two squads recorded 15 shots apiece, both with seven in the first half and eight in the second. SMU topped Indiana 8-3 in shots on goal.
Next up, the Mustangs head to Provo, Utah, to take on No. 10 BYU. The game is scheduled for 8 p.m. CT/7 p.m. MT and can be seen on BYUtv. The Cougars are 3-1-0 with a match against Utah later today.
