Late Goal Pushes FDU Past Iona Men's Soccer
TEANECK, NJ – A late goal by Fairleigh Dickinson gave Iona men's soccer its first loss of the season on Saturday night. Senior Joshua Calderon had two goals in the 3-2 defeat versus the Knights.
The Knights got off to a quick start by scoring two unanswered goals in the opening minutes. Freshman Jacob Labovitz began the scoring with his second goal of the season in the sixth minute; he took in a through ball from redshirt junior Ahu Obhakahan and buried it into the upper corner.
Fairleigh Dickinson extended its lead when junior Fredinho Mompremier ambushed the Gaels defense to give himself a successful shot for his fourth netter of the year.
Iona was able to regain momentum in the 20th minute. Calderon headed in his first goal of the season on yet another beautiful cross assist from redshirt junior Sebastian Gordillo, his second in as many days.
Calderon netted his second goal of the game at exactly 72 minutes even. Junior Humbert Ferrer, who had three shots in the second half, put a ball in front of goal, which eventually Calderon put home for the game-equalizer at the time.
In the 84th minute, FDU sophomore Wojciech Piwowarcyzk put his team on top with a set piece score assisted by redshirt sophomore Daniel Lasarte. In that same minute, the Knights were given a red card and Iona had life down one goal, and up one man on the pitch. Calderdon fired a shot on net in the 85th minute in an attempt for the hat trick, but it was saved by Knight keeper redshirt freshman Tiago Capela.
Ferrer and Calderon each finished with a team-high three shots. The Maroon & Gold out shot Fairleigh Dickinson 10 to nine, and had a six-two edge in corner kick chances.
Iona has six days off before travelling to West Hartford, CT for a matchup against Hartford University. Kickoff on Saturday, Sept. 16 is scheduled for 7 PM.
