Late Goal Spoils Patriots’ Season Opener
CHARLESTON, S.C. (Aug. 26, 2013) – Charleston Southern University senior forward Toni Lashley scored in the 80th minute to hand the Francis Marion University women’s soccer team a 1-0 loss in its opening match of the 2013 season.
FMU (0-1-0) returns to the field Friday, August 30th at 5 p.m. to face UAB at the Sleep Inn Classic in Orangeburg, S.C.
The Patriots outshot the Bucs 18-12, but failed to put one past CSU’s freshman goalkeeper Dana McLaughlin who finished the match with 10 saves. FMU sophomore goalkeeper Taylor O’Berry recorded three saves on the night while the Patriot defense limited the Buccaneers chances around the goal for the majority of the match.
CSU (1-1-0) scored the game’s lone goal in the 80th minute when Lashley corralled a long pass from junior midfielder Emma Faubert behind the Patriot defense and beat O’Berry at the top of the box to tap in the game-winning goal. Faubert was given the assist on the score.
Following the Buccaneer goal, junior forward Elizabeth Asare nearly netted the game-tying in the 83rd minute, but her shot was blocked away out of bounds by McLaughlin. FMU junior forward Chanel Harris and senior midfielder Jordan Allen each had shots on goal in the last five minutes of the match, but McLaughlin collected three more saves to help preserve the 1-0 victory.
Harris led the way for the Patriots with seven shots (four on goal), while senior forward Yasmin Bunter added five shots. FMU also held the advantage in corner kicks 8-4.
