Late Goal Trips Up Warhawks on the Road
A Wittenberg goal in the final minute of regulation sent the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's soccer team home with a 3-2 loss Saturday in Springfield, Ohio. The No. 10 Warhawks fall to 1-1 this season.
After surrendering two first half goals the Warhawks faced an uphill climb in the second half. Carly Pottle (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) cut the Warhawk deficit in half scoring in the 52nd minute of play.
Brianna Reid (Oak Creek, Wis./Oak Creek) tied the game eight minutes later, scoring on a rebound off the crossbar. Reid continues to inch closer to the school record for career goals. With two goals so far this season, she now has 49, six shy of the record.
Kaci Schonert (Racine, Wis./Horlick) had an opportunity to give the Warhawks a lead in the 70th minute but her sot was stopped by the Tiger keeper.
After several substitutions in the final 15 minutes, both teams made a push to take the lead. Wittenberg substitute Missy Bernhardt was the difference maker, scoring the game-winner with just under a minute to play.
Both teams tallied eleven shots in the match. Warhawk goalkeeper Nina Yonan (Skokie, Ill./Niles North), making her first collegiate start, made five saves in the match.
UW-W will return to the field for the home opener on Wednesday, September 7th when they take on Concordia-Wisconsin at 7 pm at Fiskum Field.
