Late goals lead Colonels past Maryville 2-0
After producing several scoring chances but coming up empty, the Centre men's soccer team broke through with two goals in the final 13 minutes to defeat Maryville College 2-0 Monday in Danville, Ky.
Though Centre outshot Maryville 20-6 overall and 12-4 in the second half, it wasn't until the 78th minute when the Colonels got on the board on a Josh Settle (Bowling Green, Ky.) free kick from just outside the box. Settle was able to bend the shot around the right side of the Scots' wall and beyond the arms of diving goalkeeper Zach Gutzman.
Centre was able to hold off Maryville's attack over the final 12 minutes and eventually added another goal when a pass from Settle found Ryan Garvey (Louisville, Ky.) behind the Maryville defense. Garvey was able to beat Gutzman one-on-one to put the game away with 9.4 seconds remaining.
Gutzman made seven saves for Maryville while Centre's Chris Jackson (Oxford, Ohio) had two stops in his seventh shutout of the season.
The result leaves both teams with identical 9-3-2 records. The Colonels have a 3-1-1 mark in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play, which they will resume Friday when they host Rhodes at 8 p.m.
