Late Goals Lift Pioneers Over Blue Hose 3-1
DENVER - The University of Denver men's soccer team scored two goals in the final 10 minutes to defeat Presbyterian 3-1 at CIBER Field at University of Denver Soccer Stadium on Friday night.
" To get a win at home is always a good feeling, but I don't think any of us were particularly happy with the way we played," head coach Bobby Muuss said. "We're happy with the win, but we're disappointed with the way we managed the game."
The Pioneers (2-1-2) opened the scoring in the 17th minute. Junior midfielder Zach Bolden (Denver, Colo.) played a free kick into the box to sophomore forward Ryan Dodson (Libertyville, Ill.) on the right side of the far post. Dodson headed the ball back across to junior defenderTheodor Remman (Hosle, Norway) who headed it into the net for his first career goal.
The Blue Hose (1-5-0) struck back in the second half when Greg White played Josh Carter into space on the left side of the field. Carter placed the ball past goalkeeper Oliver Brown (Louisville, Ky.) to tie it at 1-1 in the 65th minute.
DU retook the lead in the 81st minute when senior midfielder Mark Weigand (Fort Wayne, Ind.) played a cross from the left side of the box in to the feet of senior midfielder Josh Wren (Tulsa, Okla.). Wren knocked the ball past the keeper with a sliding shot to give the Crimson and Gold a 2-1 lead.
The Pioneers extended their lead to 3-1 in the 84th minute, when freshman midfielder Chandler Crosswait (Bedford, Texas) fired the ball into the net off a rebound after Weigand's penalty kick was saved. It marked Crosswait's first career goal.
"I like the group because they are resilient. They keep showing their resiliency," Muuss said. "We used a lot of guys tonight and we needed guys to bring energy, and they did that."
The Pioneers outshot the Blue Hose 26-7 in the contest and held a 10-1 advantage in corners.
Next up the Pioneers will host Oral Roberts at CIBER Field on Sunday at 1 p.m. MT.
