Late Goals Lift St. John’s Past Yale 2-1
September 11, 2011
QUEENS, N.Y. – Some things are out of the control of Yale women’s soccer coach Rudy Meredith. An opponent’s schedule is one of them. St. John’s, Sunday’s opponent, hadn’t played in week. The Bulldogs, meanwhile, were coming off a hard-fought 1-0 loss at Rutgers two days earlier.
That may have been a factor in the result. The Red Storm scored two goals in the final 26 minutes to overcome an early deficit and escape with a 2-1 victory at Belson Stadium.
“Today was probably the best we’ve played all season, but I think we got tired in the second half,” Meredith said.
The Bulldogs (1-2-2) controlled the first 45 minutes, outshooting the Red Storm 6-3 and having a 3-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Yale grabbed the early lead when freshman Melissa Gavin stole the ball in the box and fired a shot into the back left of the net at 28:43.
The Red Storm (4-2-2) started to seize control midway through the second half. Jen Gibbons scored her first goal of the season at 64:08 to tie the score, and Jen Leaverton got the game-winner nearly 14 minutes later.
St. John’s finished with a 9-8 edge in shots. Adele Jackson-Gibson made one save for the Bulldogs.
Despite the loss, Meredith continues to see progress with his young team.
“We’ve been changing formations, trying to figure out which one works best,” he said. “We may have found it. I thought we passed the ball very well, created a lot of chances and didn’t allow many opportunities.”
The Bulldogs will hope to build on that when they host Quinnipiac on Tuesday. Kickoff at Reese Stadium is slated for 7 p.m.
