Late Scores Propel Lumberjacks Past Lopes
The Grand Canyon University women's soccer team (0-5-1) concluded the NAU Mountain Classic with a 2-0 loss to tournament host Northern Arizona (3-3-1) Sunday at Lumberjack Stadium in Flagstaff, Ariz. The Antelopes will return to Phoenix for a five-game home stand beginning next Friday.
"Again, the girls played quite well but had a lapse in concentration and the other team capitalized on it," said head coach Stevie Gill. "We are in every game and that really is the frustrating part. In order to win, we need to be focused for the full 90 minutes and need players to step up and start scoring goals. Period."
Neither team was able to find the back of the net in the first half, as the scoreboard read 0-0 at intermission. Canyon outshot Northern Arizona 4-2 in the opening period, with two of GCU's shots being on goal. Taylor Layton and Sirena Seymour put one shot on goal each in the first 45 minutes of action.
The Lumberjacks took the lead late in the second half, scoring in 78th minute to jump out in front, 1-0. NAU scored its second goal in the 88th minute to secure the win.
Grand Canyon held the upper hand in the shots category in the matinee, as the Lopes outshot the Lumberjacks 8-6, with Jessica Valadez and Brylee Hawkins firing two shots apiece. In addition to Layton and Seymour's first half shots on goal, Patricia Pape and Joanna Lagunas pressured the NAU keeper by putting one shot on goal each in the second half. Blakely Fraasch made two saves in net on the afternoon.
The Lopes will wrap up their non-conference slate next weekend when they begin their five-game home stand with home matches against Idaho (Friday) and Lipscomb (Sunday) at GCU Soccer Field. Fans can visit www.gculopes.com to find more information on next weekend's action.
