MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Wilmington College was unable to hang on to a 3-0 lead as Rhodes College scored three second-half goals to earn a 3-3 draw in second-round play of the Rhodes Classic Sunday afternoon.
The tie leaves Wilmington at 1-0-2 on the season while Rhodes moves to 1-0-1.
“We learned some good things about ourselves this weekend. We did a lot of good things and we know we have some things to work on. Playing two tough teams down in the South is only going to help us get better when we get back,” Wilmington head coach Steve Spirk said.
The game was a coming out party for Lauren Price (Xenia/Waynesville). The sophomore forward created an own goal that put the Quakers up, 1-0, in the 11th minute.
Price made it a 2-0 game with a goal off a Sarah Watters (Cincinnati/Turpin) assist in the 19th minute.
Late in the half, Price connected again, this time off a service from Rachel Gutowski (Petoskey, Mich.) to give WC a 3-0 lead at the break.
“This was a breakout game for Lauren,” Spirk said. “She did a nice job of creating opportunities and her teammates did a nice job of getting her the ball in positions where she could be dangerous.”
Rhodes pulled within two goals with a score in the 59th minute.
“I tried to tell the team that they were going to come at us hard in the second half and try to wear us down,” Spirk said. “We gave up an early goal, which gave them confidence.”
A Rhodes goal three minutes later cut Wilmington’s lead to 3-2.
The equalizer was sent into the Quakers’ goal in the 88th minute as Rhodes completed its comeback.
On the ensuing kickoff, Wilmington had a breakaway opportunity against Rhodes’ goalkeeper that came up empty handed, and the game went to overtime.
“In overtime, we had some chances and they had some chances,” Spirk said. “It probably was a fair result. We outplayed them in the first half and they outplayed us in the second half.”
The Quakers will travel to Springfield to face Wittenberg 7 p.m. Wednesday.
