League leaders topple Spartans
NORTH MANCHESTER, IND. – Manchester University’s offense out-shot visiting Franklin College 12-11, but the visiting Grizzlies found the back of the Spartans’ net twice en route to a 2-0 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference decision Tuesday, Oct. 28.
The Black, despite falling to 7-9-1 overall and 4-3-1 in league play, gave FC goalkeeper Jessica Young several threatening moments. Sophomore midfielder Allison Moore (Richmond, Ind.), junior midfielder Bridgette Rowe (La Quinta, Calif.) and senior midfielder Amber Kent (Fountaintown, Ind.) each ricocheted strikes off the visiting goal frame, while Rowe forced a save from Young in the second half.
Franklin College, improving to 11-2-3 overall and 7-0-1 in the conference, used a pair of scores from Masey Bunn to decide the outcome. A breakaway late in the first half and a weaving dribble through the Black and Gold defense led to Bunn’s goals.
Rowe and senior midfielder Sofie Tzortzinis (Ann Arbor, Mich.) each compiled three shot attempts. Senior goalkeeper Emily Willmann (Montpelier, Ind.) earned two saves which increased her season total to 101 for her fourth successive triple-digit campaign.
The Black and Gold, still hanging on to the fourth and final postseason conference tournament slot, wrap up the regular season Saturday, Nov. 1. Mt. St. Joseph University of Ohio comes to North Manchester for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
