Lee, Streufert Propel Lady Scots In Come From Behind Victory

October 7, 2011

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- When Agnes Scott’s Anna Hernandez scored on a direct free kick in the 69th minute of action Friday evening, it only seemed to bring the Covenant women’s soccer team to life.   Junior Kara Lee and senior Dana Streufert provided answers within minutes to level the affair and eventually take the lead as Covenant won its first conference game of the season by a score of 2-1.  The Lady Scots are now 2-6-1 overall and 1-1 in the Great South.  Agnes Scott drops to 2-6-2 (0-2-1 GSAC).

After the majority of a contest that, despite not seeing any goals, still seemed to sway in Covenant’s favor, Hernandez gave the visiting Scotties a huge boost in momentum mid-way through the second period when she ripped a free kick from nearly 30 yards out into the right corner of the net.  It was the first- and last- shot Agnes Scot was allowed all night.

Down 1-0, the Lady Scots responded with a real sense of urgency where they turned up their attack almost instantly.  After a pair of corner kicks, Lee equalized with a shot from close range, having won the battle for a loose ball right around the six yard box.

Covenant’s sense of urgency did not waver after Lee’s goal.  Opportunities at the feet of Streufert, Teagan Wood, Casey Craft, and Eliza Drew went begging before central mid-fielder Dana Streufert was able to give Covenant the lead.  Streufert came up with a loose ball of her own outside the penalty area, dribbled along the right side, then scored on a well-placed ball that went over the reach of Scottie goaltender Ashley Watts.

The Lady Scots two goals came within 13 minutes of Agnes Scott claiming the lead.

Covenant finished the game outshooting Agnes Scott 18-1.  The Lady Scots had 9 corner kicks to the Scotties none.

Covenant will return to the pitch on Wednesday, October 5 at Spelman College then at home on Saturday, October 8 for a homecoming match against local TN-Temple University.
