Lee Uses Strong Second Half to Beat CSU
Columbus – Lee University scored four goals including three in the second half to knock off the 24th ranked Columbus State University women's soccer team 4-2 on Sunday afternoon. The non-conference tilt took place at the Walden Soccer Complex.
It was just the ninth time in program history that CSU allowed four or more goals in a match and the first since October 1, 2008 when the University of West Florida defeated the Lady Cougars 5-0.
"We didn't execute on the defensive side of the ball," said head coach Jay Entlich. "Lee is a great team but we gave them too many opportunities and they took advantage of it."
The scoring opportunities were plentiful to begin with for each team. In the 14th minute, Nicole Corcione had a shot blocked but the rebound went straight to Kelsey Pelletier. The junior sent a pass across the box toChelsea Person whose shot was saved by a charging Haley Gribler in the net.
A minute later, Corcione sent the ball halfway across the goalline but a Lee defender cleared it before a goal was called.
It didn't take long for the Lady Flames to have an attack of their own as Laura Thacker scored the match's first goal in the 20th minute. Debbie Rogers played the ball to the forward off a corner kick.
Columbus State (3-3-0) continued to attack and found the equalizer in the 29th minute. Pelletier again made things happen as she dribbled and slipped a pass to Person inside the box. The redshirt sophomore finished it off for her third goal of the season.
Coming out of the break, Lee (3-2-0) continued to put pressure on the Lady Cougar defense. After a few early shots, the Lady Flames found the back of the net again, this time in the 56th minute. Leah Fortune played a great ball to Summer Lanter who dashed through defenders and beatMeosha Hatcher to the left.
Like they did earlier, the Lady Cougars roared back and tied the game just 21 seconds later as Corcione scored her first collegiate goal. Person dribbled the ball from the right side into the box and found Corcione standing just outside of the six. Corcione squared the ball up for the goal.
From there, however, it was all Lee. In the last 21 minutes, CSU managed only five shots while Lee found the net twice. Kinsey Cichowitz scored the game-winner in the 64th minute finding the upper-left portion of the net while Thacker scored her second goal of the game off of another corner kick in the 87th minute.
Lee outshot Columbus State 18-16 in the contest and also held a 2-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Meosha Hatcher suffered her first loss of the season allowing four goals while making five saves. For Lee, Haley Gribler recorded the victory denying five shots.
Columbus State will take a few days off before welcoming Peach Belt Conference rival USC Aiken to town on Saturday, September 28th. The match will begin at 3:00 p.m. at the Walden Soccer Complex.
