Lehigh drops tough 4-0 final at Binghamton
September 2, 2012
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - The Lehigh women’s soccer team owned a 9-8 edge in shots and 4-2 in corner kicks, but were unable to find the back of the net as Binghamton exploded for four goals in a 4-0 win on Sunday. The Mountain Hawks were led by sophomore Darby Wiegand and freshman Madi Morgan, who each posted two shots, and one on goal. The Bearcats held a 1-0 lead until the 58th minute, when they exploded for three goals in a 27:24 span to end any doubt.
“It was a really frustrating game today,” said Lehigh head coach Eric Lambinus. “We played much better than Friday and created better chances, but we’re still not making good decisions in key moments. Maybe it is our inexperience or that we are still getting to know each other, but we need to get better collectively. If we play to our potential, I believe we can turn it around.”
Sophomore Ashley Blanks played the first half between the pipes, making two saves while allowing a goal. Freshman Ani Nahapetian saw her first-career action in the second half, making one stop.
Binghamton’s Jamie Holliday got the scoring started at 19:31, while she later assisted on the second and third goals, both scored by Sarah Furminger. Those came at the 57:08 and 75:55 marks. The Bearcats scored their final goal in the 85th minute when Sophia Sylla converted a breakaway opportunity.
Lehigh held the edge in shots and corners while both sides made three saves.
The Mountain Hawks will eye their first win when they travel to Monmouth on Friday to face the Hawks. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
