Lehigh heads to Saint Joseph's, CCSU
BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh women's soccer team will look to build on its early-season success in two road matches this weekend. The Mountain Hawks head to Saint Joseph's Friday for a 7 p.m. game before traveling to Central Connecticut State for a 3 p.m. kickoff. Lehigh, who's coming off a 1-1 tie against Villanova out of the Big East, return to the road for the first time since Aug. 31 at Mount St. Mary's. There will be live video and stats available for both games this weekend.
Lehigh is 2-0-1 overall, undefeated after three games for the first time since 2005. The Mountain Hawks began that season with five straight wins and were 6-0-1 before their first loss.
Senior Darby Wiegand has led the offensive charge so far this year, scoring a goal in all three games. Additionally, freshman Grace Correll has gotten off to a quick start in her collegiate career with a goal and assist. Senior Ashley Blanks has been stellar in goal, owning a 0.45 goals against average and .917 save percentage.
Saint Joseph's has been up and down to start its 2014 campaign with three wins and three losses so far. They bounced back from a 5-0 defeat against Hofstra with back-to-back one-goal wins against UMBC and Loyola last weekend. Emily Gingrich leads the team in scoring with five of the team's six goals while Olivia McEachern has a goal and assist. Allison Ebling has played every minute in goal, owning a 1.83 GAA and .676 save percentage.
Lehigh is 5-7-1 all-time vs. Saint Joseph's with the last meeting coming in 2012, a 2-1 home loss. The Mountain Hawks won the previous meeting by a 4-1 final on Sept. 12, 2010.
Meanwhile, the Blue Devils have struggled so far this season with an overall record of 1-3-1. Currently on a two-game losing streak, they have a game against NJIT on Friday night before they turn their focus to Lehigh. Five players have two points or more, led by Charlie Branch with a goal and assist. Nikki Turley has started all five games in goal, playing every minute while posting a 1.48 GAA and .692 save percentage.
Lehigh is 1-0 all-time against Central Connecticut State, beating the Blue Devils last year by a 1-0 final. Senior Darby Dustman scored the game's lone goal on a header.
After their games this weekend the Mountain Hawks begin preparation for Patriot League play. They will return home to host American on Saturday, Sept. 20 at the Ulrich Sports Complex.
