Lehigh hosts American in league opener Sat.
BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh women's soccer team will look to bounce back from a two-game slide in its Patriot League opener against American on Saturday. Opening kickoff at the Ulrich Sports Complex is set for 3 p.m. The Mountain Hawks are eying their first league-opening victory since 2006.
After a 2-0 start to the season, Lehigh tied Villanova in overtime and then lost to Saint Joseph's and Central Connecticut State on the road last weekend. Senior Darby Wiegand has led the offense so far, leading her squad with three goals and one assist. She's had a hand in the Mountain Hawks' last four goals. Wiegand scored the game-winner in the first two games of the season and recorded Lehigh's lone goal against Villanova.
Wiegand has been meshing well with freshman Grace Correll who has burst onto the scene for the Mountain Hawks, playing in all five games this season and contributing two goals and two assists. Meanwhile senior Ashley Blanks and junior Ani Nahapetian have been splitting time in goal with Blanks playing three games and Nahapetian playing two. Both have recorded a shutout. Blanks has a 0.93 goals against average and .824 save percentage while Nahapetian owns a 0.50 GAA and .750 save percentage.
American has amassed a 3-5 record so far this season. The Eagles have been fairly successful at home, posting a 3-2 record, but they have yet to win a road game. Senior forward Lindsay Muri leads American with four goals and two assists. Other players making contributions are junior Kelly Donovan with one goal and two assists, along with sophomore Marley Jennings with two goals. Charlene Belanger has been strong in goal, owning a 0.91 GAA and .818 save percentage.
The Eagles lead the all-time series, 10-5-1. American has won the last two meetings with Lehigh's last win coming in 2011 at home. The last three meetings have been decided by 1-0 final scores.
After Saturday's game, Lehigh will continue league play at Bucknell next Friday (Sept. 26).
