Lesperance Leads Warhawks to Victory
Marie Lesperance totaled five points as the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's soccer team notched a 3-0 victory over Edgewood College Friday night at Fiskum Field in Whitewater.
Lesperance, a freshman midfielder, got the Warhawks on the board in the 11th minute, scoring her first collegiate goal on a pass from Kelsey Beld. Less than ten minutes later she struck again, this time scoring on a pass from Jenna Woodson. Woodson, a junior midfielder, has now tallied 18 career assists, which ties her for fourth all-time in UW-Whitewater women's soccer history.
The Warhawks stretched their lead to 3-0 when Carly Pottle headed a cross from Lesperance past the Edgewood goalkeeper. The goal is the first of the season for the sophomore forward.
Jordan Myers was in goal for the Warhawks the entire ninety minutes but did not need to make a save to earn the shutout. Myers now has 23 career shutouts, the most in school history.
UW-Whitewater outshot Edgewood 13-5 in the game and tallied eight corner kicks to the Eagles' two. So far this season the Warhawks have recorded 29 corner kicks to their opponents' six.
Twenty-four different players saw the field for UW-Whitewater and head coach Ryan Quamme commented, "We got the opportunity to play a lot of our women, and I think we improved from Wednesday which is what we asked them to do." He added, "We changed a few of our tactics and the women responded well."
The Warhawks (2-1-0) will play their next game against North Central College at home on Sunday at 3 pm. When Quamme was asked about what to expect he stated, "We weren't thrilled with the way we played them last season, so I think we will be focused and ready to go."
