Lewandowski to compete in Challenge Cup
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Former Lehigh women's soccer great Gina Lewandowski '06 is ready to suit up with Sky Blue FC as part of the National Women's Soccer League Challenge Cup, beginning next week in Herriman, Utah. The event kicks off on Saturday, June 27 at Zions Bank Stadium, with Lewandowski and Sky Blue set for their first game on Tuesday, June 30. The event will run from June 27 through July 26 – in place of the typical NWSL season – featuring preliminary rounds, two knockout stages and the final.
At Lehigh, Lewandowski was a two-time Patriot League Player of the Year and member of the league's 25th Anniversary Team, as announced in 2015. Her 15 goals in 2004 remain tied for the program record while her 12 in 2013 are still third most. Today, Lewandowski is a defender for Sky Blue and has enjoyed well over a decade-long career in professional soccer, mostly in Germany. She played from 2007-12 with FFC Frankfurt and 2012-19 in Bayern Munich, before returning to the United States to join Sky Blue FC last season.
Sky Blue kicks off its Challenge Cup Preliminary Round vs. the OL Reign on Tuesday at 10 p.m. ET. Lewandowski returns to action on Saturday, July 4 vs. the Utah Royals (12:30 p.m. ET), on Wednesday, July 8 against the Houston Dash (10 p.m. ET) and Monday, July 13 vs. the North Carolina Courage (10 p.m. ET). All four games can be seen on CBS All-Access and fans outside of the U.S. and Canada can watch on Twitter.
