Liberty Blanks Presbyterian, 2-0
LYNCHBURG, Va. – Midfielder Pepe Segarra scored twice, and Liberty posted its fourth shutout of the season, downing the Presbyterian Blue Hose, 2-0, on Senior Day, Saturday at Osborne Stadium.
After a scoreless first half, Segarra netted his third and fourth goals of the season in the second half in the Liberty victory.
The Flames forced the Blue Hose to counter attack, limiting the visitors to just four shots in the contest.
Unbeaten in the last four contests (3-0-1), Liberty notches a key victory in Big South play to move to 4-2-1 and 7-7-2 overall. Presbyterian drops to 4-3 in conference and 6-9-2 overall.
Before the contest, Liberty seniors Martin Agedo, Alan Arellano, Kyle Carr, Oluwatomiwa Kosoka and Jeremy Lee were each honored as part of Senior Day activities.
The first half saw play contained to the midfield. Liberty generated five shots during the period, while Presbyterian had one.
During the 26th minute, Liberty midfielder Jovanni Chavez ran past a defender and free at the top of the 18-yard box for a shot. However, the midfielder pushed an attempt for the top right corner of the net over the goal high.
Agedo split a pair of Blue Hose defenders at the 30 minute mark and came free for a shot from above the left side of the box. The senior’s shot was ripped high over the far side of the goal, keeping the contest scoreless at half.
Liberty struck for its first goal of the contest early in the second half. Forward Tresor Mbuyu broke free past a line of Presbyterian defenders and ran onto a ball pushed forward from the midfleld. Finding himself one-on-one with Blue Hose goalkeeper Connor Behrend, Mbuyu fired a shot which Behrend deflected out. Segarra pounced on the ball just inside the 18-yard box and pumped a shot into the open the net to give the Flames a 1-0 lead at 54:38.
Liberty continued to control play and came close to extending its lead during the 79th minute. Once again, the ball was placed from the midfield into open space in the Flames’ offensive end. Forward Rigoberto Rojas ran onto the ball at the top of the box and sent a shot left, hitting the goalpost.
Segarra then lengthened the Liberty advantage to what proved to be the final score of 2-0. Agredo gained the left side of the 18-yard box and headed the ball off of Blue Hose keeper Behrend. The ricochet deflected high and outside the box. Segarra tracked down the ball and ripped a shot from the left side, 20 yards out, for his second goal of the day at 87:29.
Liberty goalkeeper James Knoebel was not forced to make a save in the contest to record his fourth blank sheet on the year. Behrend made two saves for Presbyterian.
Liberty outshot Presbyterian, 13-4, and held a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks.
The Flames will finish their 2016 regular season, Wednesday. Liberty will travel to Farmville, Va., for a Big South contest against the Longwood Lancers. Match time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
