Liberty Garners No. 4 Seed for Tournament
LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Liberty Flames will be the No. 4 seed for the 2016 Big South Men's Soccer Championship. The conference announced the seedings and pairings with the close of the conference's regular season earlier this evening.
This season, the top six teams in the conference's regular season standings qualify for the tournament, with the higher seeds hosting each round.
Liberty will entertain the No. 5 seed Presbyterian Blue Hose to Osborne Stadium for a quarterfinal matchup on Sunday at 2 p.m. The Flames, who fell in 4-3 in overtime at Longwood this evening, finished their regular season with a 4-3-1 conference record and compiled 13 points to finish in fourth in the Big South standings.
Liberty will enter its quarterfinal match-up with a 7-8-2 overall mark. Presbyterian completed Big South action with a 4-4 mark and 12 points to place fifth in the regular season standings. The Flames defeated the Blue Hose, 2-0, in their regular season match, last Saturday at Osborne Stadium.
The winner of the match advances to play No. 1 seed Radford on Wednesday in Radford, Va. Radford claimed the No. 1 seed for the Big South Championship and a first round bye with a 7-1 mark in conference play and 21 points.
UNC Asheville finished with a 5-3 Big South record and 15 points to grab the No. 3 seed. The Bulldogs will host the No. 6 seed Longwood (3-5, nine points) in Sunday's other quarterfinal match. The winner plays No. 2 seed High Point on Wednesday. The Panthers received a first round bye by virtue of finishing second in the Big South standings with a 5-1-2 conference mark and 17 points.
Wednesday's winners will advance to the Big South title contest, Sunday at the home site of the higher seed. Match time is scheduled for 2 p.m.
The quarterfinals and semifinals will air on the Big South Network, with the final airing on ESPN3. The Big South's Tournament champion receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Men's Soccer Tournament. The conference championship schedule is as follows:
Quarterfinals, Sunday, Nov. 6 (at Higher Seed)
Match 1: #5 Presbyterian at #4 Liberty, 2 p.m.
Match 2: #6 Longwood at #3 UNC Asheville, 4 p.m.
Semifinals, Wenesday, Nov. 9 (at Higher Seed)
Match 3: Winner Match 1 at #1 Radford, 7 p.m.
Match 4: Winner Match 2 at #2 High Point, 7 p.m.
Finals, Sunday, Nov. 13 (at High Seed)
Match 5: Winner Match 3 vs. Winner Match 4, 2 p.m.
