Lights Out! Terriers and UMBC Battle to 0-0 Draw Due To Power Outage
Baltimore, Maryland---On the first day of the Holiday Inn Express BWI Classic, the Terriers men's soccer team battled host UMBC Retrievers to a 0-0 draw. The game was called in the 72nd minute due to a campus wide power outage. (Per NCAA rules, the contest reached the legal 70-minute mark thus making it an official match).
The Terriers are now 0-1-1 on the year while UMBC stands at 1-0-1 on the season. The Terriers will play at Navy on Saturday evening while Fairleigh Dickinson, who defeated the Midshipmen tonight 1-0, travels to Baltimore to square off against the Retrievers on Saturday for the conclusion of the two-game tournament.
“I thought we played a good game tonight against a tough opponent,” said head coach Tom Giovatto. “Some of the young guys had a good game tonight. As a whole, we do need to do a better job finishing our scoring opportunities.”
UMBC had a chance in the 64th minute to take a one-goal lead as Andrew Bulls bended the free kick from 24 yards away that bounced off the crossbar above St. Francis' goalkeeper Tyler Clarhaut's reach.
Junior midfielder Adam Maabdi had a chance in the 72nd minute to put St. Francis on the board after teammate Gabriel Bagot was able to cross-up his defender and find Maabdi at the top of the box. Maabdi's shot was too strong and sailed over the goal, keeping the score dead-locked at zero.
Seconds later, the lights at Retriever Soccer Park begun to flutter and ultimately a power-outage stopped the game with 18:49 seconds remaining.
The Terriers were out-shot 12-10 but committed three less fouls in the contest (11-8 UMBC). Junior forward Giorgio Ferrara, Maabdi, and freshman midfielder Victor Claesson each had two shots to lead the way for the Terriers.
