Lions Nip Titans on Early Goal, 1-0
Loyola Marymount’s Brianne Medved’s second goal of the year, a floater to the left post in the 12th minute, was all the Lions needed on Friday night as they overcame a 19-3 deficit in the shot column to hand host Cal State Fullerton a 1-0 loss at Titan Stadium.
The Titans (1-4-1 overall) dropped their fourth-straight one-goal match and their third decision to a West Coast Conference school in their last four contests. LMU improved to 5-1-1 overall with the win despite not having a shot in the second half and finishing without a corner kick for the match.
Medved’s strike came rather unassumingly with 11:47 to play in the first as she settled a ball at the top of the box and looped a floater to the left that just kept carrying into the left side of the goal for the only score of the match.
Fullerton had the first chance of the match just before Medved’s goal as Ann Marie Tangorra slotted a ball through the defense on a nice run up the middle, but Lions’ keeper Brittany Jagger smothered the ball before Stacey Fox could run on to it. Jagger then came up big again in the closing seconds of the period as she made one of her six saves on a shot by Summer Chavez with time running down to preserve her side’s 1-0 lead.
The second half was all Titans, outshooting LMU by a 12-0 count and holding a 6-0 advantage in corners for the period. However, all of that offense did not translate into a score as Jagger made four saves after the break to clinch the shutout. Two golden chances midway through the half were turned away as Fox was denied off a corner kick by Erica Mazeau, her shot through traffic cleared off the line by a defender, and Chelsey Patterson’s long-range shot less than a minute later from 25 yards out was saved by Jagger with Erica Mazeau bearing down on her in the box.
Caitlin Mellano also had a chance with just under three to play in regulation as she took the ball down the left side and broke in on Jagger only to have the LMU keeper get enough of a hand on the ball to redirect the senior’s shot off the post and away from harm.
Nine different Titan players had at least one shot led by three apiece from Erica Mazeau, Stacey Fox, and Ann Marie Tangorra. Cori McGovern, Medved, and Tawni Martino accounted for the Lions’ three shots on the night.
Cal State Fullerton returns to the Titan Stadium pitch on Sunday (Sept. 11) at 1 p.m. as it hosts Columbia in a non-conference matinee. A moment of silence to honor the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks will be held prior to kick-off with all “First Responders” in attendance honored at halftime.
