Lobos and UC Davis Play to a Scoreless Draw
New Mexico 0, UC Davis 0 (Match Report)
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – On a breezy and blustery day, neither New Mexico nor UC Davis could find the back of the net as the two teams played to a scoreless draw in the final match of the Jack in the Box Classic. Texas Tech won the earlier match 2-0 over UC Santa Barbara.
The Lobos (2-7-1) and the Aggies (2-5-2) battled to a near stand-still statistically, although UNM had the better opportunities to pierce the net. The best of those came in the first overtime when the Lobos were moving into the teeth of a 25 MPH wind. With just over three left in the opening OT period, Ruth Bruciaga faked right, took a touch left and cracked a rocket that was labeled for the upper left corner, but Taylor Jern got airborne and knocked it away.
The was UNM’s second good opportunity in the period as Savannah Viola was free on the back end of a Brooke Ellison service, but she couldn’t get enough on the shot, and the defense cleared it away.
Bruciaga and Katie Hinman teamed up for UNM up front to cause plenty of problems for UC Davis, garnering all four of UNM’s shots on net.
UC Davis’ best chance came in the opening 10 minutes, when Ashley Edwards took a one-timer from the penalty spot on a cross, but Cassie Ulrich made one of her two saves to keep the Aggie off the board. UNM outshot UC Davis 12-10, and 4-2 on net. There were 27 fouls in the match, 14 on UNM, and 13 on UC Davis.

Quotable
“I thought we played well enough to win again. We got in, we did everything right inside the final third which we hadn’t been, and we got more shots off. Defensively I’m real proud of their efforts. They bent but they didn’t break.” – UNM Head Coach Kit Vela.
