Lobos Downed in Seconds by #10 Saint Mary's
BOX SCORE
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. --- After holding the top-scoring team in the nation scoreless throughout 89 minutes, The University of New Mexico men's soccer team fell in the final 20 seconds on Wednesday night to No. 10 Saint Mary's by a final score of 1-0.
Saint Mary's (10-0-0) is one of just 10 undefeated teams left in the nation and one of just two that has yet to register a tie - though the Gaels were 20 seconds away from their first potential tie at the UNM Soccer Complex.
UNM (3-6-0, 1-1-0 C-USA) freshman keeper Alex Fetterly registered five saves between the posts in his third start of the season before allowing the gamewinner low in the left corner off a scrum in front of the net. Fetterly came out of the goal and Saint Mary's Jake Rudel worked around before passing quickly left to Jakub Svehlik for his fourth goal of the season, a tap into the bottom corner.
"That's about as tough as it comes. I thought we had some good sequences, but there were little mistakes," head coach Jeremy Fishbein said. "We gave the ball away and that was a team that was very good in transition.
"Our guys train hard and play hard, these outcomes are tough. But we've got a good conference game coming up on Saturday against FIU. We'll recoup and be excited for another one."
On the night, Saint Mary's outshot UNM 13-6 in an outstanding defensive effort for the Lobos. The Gaels posted six shots on goal compared to one for UNM off the foot of sophomore Matt Puig in the first half. UNM held the advantage in corner kick opportunities on the night, 4-3.
The first half marked a tight 45 minutes as UNM posted three shots in the first frame, one on goal. The Lobos created several opportunities, including a great chance by senior Antoine Vial in the 39th minute.
The Lobos will continue their three-game home stretch on Saturday, Oct. 29, as they resume C-USA play against Florida International at 11 a.m. MT.
