Lobos' Fisher, Rogers Invited to MLS Combine
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - University of New Mexico seniors Oniel Fisher and James Rogers were invited to the 2015 MLS Player Combine the league announced Thursday. They are two of just 55 college seniors from across the country invited to tryout in front of the coaching staffs for all 20 MLS clubs.
The combine will be held from Jan. 8-13 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., in preparation of the Jan. 15 draft in Philadelphia.
"I'm really excited for James and Oniel," UNM head coach Jeremy Fishbein said. "My only disappointment is that Nick Miele, Riley McGovern, Mattie Gibbons and Patrick Poblete weren't invited, as I feel each have qualities which make them very attractive to MLS teams. James and Oniel came to New Mexico with the goal of obtaining a degree, being part of a tremendous program and having the opportunity to play professionally after college. This is the first step and I am confident that they will both show well and put themselves in a great position for the January MLS draft."
Rogers helped the Lobos win 60 games in his four years with the program and finished his career among the top 10 in program history in shots (179 - fourth), assists (20 - fourth), points (64 - eighth), goals (22 - eighth) and starts (83 - eighth).
Fisher, meanwhile, scored four goals in his two years at UNM, each one of which was a game-winner. The first came against Penn St. in the NCAA Tournament last season, and three came this year: vs. No. 13 Akron on Aug. 29, at San Diego on Sept. 14, and vs. Missouri State on Oct. 12. Both he and Rogers were instrumental in the Lobos' run to the College Cup in 2013.
The 55 seniors were selected by a committee consisting of NCAA Division I coaches from every conference as well as MLS representatives.
