Longwood Falls At Home To Visiting Radford 1-0
September 16, 2011
FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University dropped a difficult 1-0 women’s soccer decision to in-state school Radford University of the Big South Conference Friday night at the Athletics Complex in Farmville. Julie Ruh’e scored the decisive goal in the 79th minute for the visiting Highlanders (5-2-0) against the host Lancers (2-4-3). Longwood will play again on Sunday afternoon, September 18, back on the road at in-state opponent and Big South member Virginia Military Institute in Lexington beginning at 2 p.m.
Longwood and Radford battled scoreless through the first period to the intermission, though the Highlanders forced the action during the opening 45 minutes with an 8-3 advantage in shots. The Lancers picked up the pace in the second half and began pressing the visitors, and almost scored a goal about 15 minutes in with three-straight shots on-goal within 1:22 of each other that were each saved by the RU keeper. The first of the three attempts was the best opportunity as junior captain Lindsey Ottavio|Fairfax (W.T. Woodson) was dribbling to the right across the box and placed her shot to the left post only to be stopped on a diving save at 60:53. Ruh’e finally managed to score for Radford at 78:23 when she collected a loose ball in the box near the left post following a free kick and slipped the ball past the LU keeper to the right corner of the net.
“I think I’d rather play another overtime game than lose a tight one like that,” said 18th-year head coach Todd Dyer ‘93. “It was a physical battle, and I think both teams competed at a very high level. Give them credit for creating something out of nothing on that set piece. We had the same opportunity to do the same thing, and we also created some nice chances in the flow of the game but we have to find a way to punch through and get those goals if we want to get results.”
Radford took a 13-8 advantage in shots during the contest, though it was just a 7-6 edge in attempts on-goal, while the Highlanders had a 4-2 lead on corner kicks. Ottavio had three shots, each on-goal, to lead Longwood, while junior Nikki Glisson|Mechanicsville (Hanover) took two shots, one on-goal at 61:33. Junior keeper Kyra Byron|Richmond (Mills E. Godwin) played the duration in front of the net for the Lancers with five saves and LU registered a team save as well.
Rachel Conway took three shots to lead Radford, while Ruh’e and Maryellen Derenda both had two shots, each on-goal. Che’ Brown played the duration in goal for the Highlanders with six saves.
