September 6, 2013
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- Emily Gingrich scored two goals during the first 10 minutes of the match to lead Saint Joseph’s University of the Atlantic 10 Conference to a 5-1 women’s soccer victory past visiting Longwood University on Friday evening in Philadelphia. Freshman Gina D’Orazio/Moseley scored her first collegiate goal for the Lancers (0-2-2) in the first half against the unbeaten and host Hawks (3-0-2). Longwood will remain in the City of Brotherly Love to play again at Drexel University of the Colonial Athletic Association on Sunday, September 8 at 12 p.m.
Saint Joseph’s jumped ahead early after a pair of quick unassisted goals by Gingrich in the second and 10th minutes of the contest. Longwood battled back and was able to close to within 2-1 when D’Orazio tallied the first goal of her college career at 23:54, also unassisted, and it remained a one-goal match at the intermission. Each team had additional scoring chances during the opening 45 minutes, including a pair of shots off the post by the Hawks, as well as an attempt off the post by senior Kelsey Pardue/Richmond.
Longwood started the second half with five quick shots in the first 15 minutes, including another attempt from Pardue that hit the post, while three were saved by Saint Joseph’s goalkeeper Lauren Jancuska. The Hawks scored another goal on their first attempt of the period in the 65th minute, as Mo Hawkins scored via a header, assisted by Shannon Westhead for a 3-1 advantage. It opened the net for SJU, who would add goals in the 72nd and 80th minutes by Morgan Duffy and Nicole Moonan, respectively, the earlier assisted by Olivia McEachern. The Lancers managed a pair of on-target shots in the 87th minute, but each was stopped.
“That 5-1 scoreline sums it all up pretty well,” said 20th-year head coach Todd Dyer ‘93. “Defensively, it felt like we were throwing gas on a fire. We will all take ownership of this result and move on.”
Longwood had a 19-16 edge in shots, including 10-9 in attempts on goal, and it was a 6-2 advantage on corner kicks for the Lancers. Junior Samantha Phillips/Chesapeake had five shots, three on goal, and D’Orazio and freshman Nickie Ivey/ Chesapeake each had three shots, each on goal by D’Orazio and one on goal by Ivey. Graduate goalkeeper Shelby Hall/ Purcellville played the first 68:25 in front of the net with the two saves, allowing three goals, while sophomore keeper Hailey Machen/Fairfax played the final 21:35 with two saves, yielding two goals.
Saint Joseph’s was led by Hawkins with four shots, one on target, and Gingrich added three shots, two on target. Jancuska played the first 82:30 for the Hawks with seven saves and the one goal allowed, while Allison Ebling played the final 7:30 with two saves.
Longwood and Saint Joseph’s were playing for the first time in the sport of women's soccer.
