Longwood Falls On Road At Appalachian State
BOONE, N.C. -- Longwood University dropped a 3-0 non-conference women’s soccer decision on the road at Appalachian State University of the Southern Conference Sunday afternoon in Boone, North Carolina. The Lancers (3-2) trailed just 1-0 at the intermission before lightening in the area delayed the start of the second half that witnessed the Mountaineers (2-3) adding two more goals. Longwood will play again on Sunday, September 9, on the road again at UMBC of the America East Conference in Baltimore, Maryland beginning at 1 p.m.
“We got pulled into a very physical game and we lost that fight,” said 19th year head coach Todd Dyer ‘93. “In that situation, we either need to be tougher, or we need to play better soccer. We did neither … the scoreboard showed that, so we’re humbled right now … and we’re also eager to get back on the practice field to get ready for our next game.”
Appalachian State received its first-half goal from Samantha Childress, assisted by both Kate Ward and Nicole Steyl at 31:43. The Mountaineers added second-half goals by Ward, assisted by Merlin Beckwith at 73:48, and Julia Holz closed the scoring at 86:10, assisted by Taylor Dunlap.
ASU took a 25-10 advantage in shots, though only at 9-2 in attempts on goal, and the Mountaineers had a 4-1 edge in corner kicks. Junior Kelsey Pardue|Henrico (Hermitage) had three shots, while senior captain Lindsey Ottavio|Fairfax (W.T. Woodson) and sophomore Samantha Phillips|Chesapeake (Grassfield) each added two shots for Longwood. Senior keeper Kyra Byron|Richmond (Mills. E. Godwin) played the duration in front of the net for the Lancers with six saves.
Holz had seven shots to lead ASU, while keeper Megan Roberson played the duration for the Mountaineers with two saves while posting the shutout.
Longwood and ASU were playing for the ninth time in the sport of women’s soccer as the Mountaineers now lead the series at 7-2.
