Longwood Slips Past UMBC Women’s Soccer, 1-0
BALTIMORE – UMBC women’s soccer dropped its third-straight contest on Sunday afternoon, as Longwood’s Kelsey Pardue scored the lone goal in a 1-0 victory at the Retriever Soccer Park. The Retrievers outshot the Lancers in the contest 9-7, with LU’s goal coming on its only shot of the second half.
Longwood improves to 4-2 on the year, while UMBC falls to 1-6-1.
The two teams played a scoreless first half, despite scoring opportunities on both ends. The Retrievers came out of the break aggressive, maintaining possession in Lancer territory, however it was Longwood that would strike for the game-winner at the 57:27 mark. A long through ball from Kelsey McDonald found Pardue ahead of the pack. Pardue dribbled down and was able to beat UMBC goalkeeper Lauren Kadet (Oakville, Ontario/St. Thomas Aquinas), placing the ball inside the far right post for her first goal of the season.
The Retrievers continued to put pressure on the Lancers throughout the final stanza and nearly tied it up in the 72nd minute when a foul was called on LU keeper Kyra Byron for grabbing the ball outside of the box. Freshman back Alexa Quaranta (Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall) put a touch on the ball on the free kick to set up a shot for senior forward Rachel McKee (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron), but Byron made the stop to preserve the one goal lead.
UMBC hits the road again on Friday, Sept. 14 when it takes on VCU, marking the final non-conference game of the season for the Retrievers.
