Longwood Ties At Richmond 0-0 In Double-OT
RICHMOND, Va. -- Longwood University battled to a 0-0 women's soccer double-overtime tie at the University of Richmond of the Atlantic 10 Conference (A-10) on Friday night in Richmond. The visiting Lancers (0-1-2) had a slight 9-8 edge in shots on goal, led on the night by junior Samantha Phillips/Chesapeake with three, while graduate goalkeeper Shelby Hall/Purcellville made eight saves for the shutout. Keeper Emily Kelly had nine stops for the host Spiders (1-1-1). Longwood will play again on the road at Saint Joseph's University, also of the A-10, next Friday, September 6 at 5 p.m. in Philadelphia.
"That's always a hard fought game and to earn a shutout on the road against such a quality opponent speaks well for our program," said 20th-year head coach Todd Dyer '93. "Our best soccer was in the first half and then it turned into a physical grind for both teams in the second half. We're definitely figuring some things out in the back."
Longwood and Richmond battled scoreless throughout the 110 minutes of action, the second consecutive such effort for the Lancers. The first 45 minutes had the Spiders with a slight 7-6 edge in scoring attempts, though it was 3-3 in shots on goal. UR increased its margin in shots to 14-6 during the second 45, but Longwood was more accurate with a 5-4 edge in attempts on target. The Spiders took three shots in each of the two 10-minute overtime periods, while the Lancers had four attempts in the second extra period, though each team only had one attempt on goal in the OT. UR did have an attempt off the crossbar in the first OT, and another shot by the Spiders hit the post in the second OT.
Richmond took a 27-16 advantage in shots, but Longwood had the 9-8 edge in attempts on goal, and it was a 4-3 edge on corner kicks for the Lancers. Senior Kelsey Pardue/Richmond led the way with four shots, one on goal, and Phillips and junior Kelsey McDonald/Kennett Square, Pennsylvania each had three shots, one on goal by McDonald. Hall played the duration in front of the net with the eight saves for her second-straight shutout.
Richmond was led by Shannon Colligan with five shots, two on target, and Meaghan Carrigan also added five shots, while Kelly had the nine saves and the shutout for the Spiders.
Longwood and Richmond were playing for the eighth time in the sport of women's soccer, and the Spiders still lead the closely played series, 3-2-3.
