Lundy’s two goals carry Lady Bisons to first
MACON, Ga. – Two goals from freshman Ellen Lundy including the game-winner in the 83rd minute gave the Lipscomb women’s soccer team a 2-1 win over Mercer in Atlantic Sun Conference action.
“It was a great result for our girls today,” said head coach Kevin O’Brien.
The win gave Lipscomb its first A-Sun victory since a 2-1 win over Belmont on Oct. 7, 2011. The Bisons also tied a school record with its fourth win on the season improving to 4-5-2 overall and 1-1-0 in the A-Sun.
Mercer falls to 6-5-1 and 1-1-0 in the A-Sun.
Lundy put the Lady Bisons on the scoreboard in the 15th minute. Junior forward Baylee Linnell slipped the ball behind the defense as Lundy was able to touch the ball past the Bears defender.
“I am super proud and have to tip my hat to Ellen Lundy,” said O’Brien. “She continues to convert the chances that she gets.”
This was the sixth time this year that Linnell and Lundy have connected for a Lady Bisons goal.
Mercer tied the game at 1-1 when MacKenzie Stewart knocked Kim Murphy’s cross into the back of the net.
“We took the lead and played some fantastic soccer,” O’Brien said. “Mercer is an excellent team and they battled back and equalized right before the half.
“As a coach it’s tough because your team comes in at half time and is a little bit discouraged.“
Lundy broke the tie in the 83rd minute, taking a pass from freshman Alesondra Colbert. Lundy’s shot went overtop the charging Bears goalkeeper.
“I thought our girls showed a character and resolve that we haven’t seen up to this point,” said O’Brien. “Ultimately, today was a team result. They kept an attacking mindset and were rewarded with a great goal.”
“We utilized everyone that was on the trip and everyone provided a great spark and was an integral part of our success today. “
Lundy’s 10th and 11th goal of the year increases her A-Sun lead in the category while also boosting her point total to 25 points on the season. She entered the weekend ranked 10th in the NCAA in goals scored and 13th in total points.
Bisons goalkeeper Anna Buhigas recoreded six saves and improved her save percentage to .803 on the season.
Maggie Cropp of Mercer was credited with four saves in the net.
“Hopefully this win will get us kick started for a great rest of the conference season,” O’Brien said. “I am confident that this result will instill (in the players) an even greater belief in our chances to have a successful Asun campaign.”
The Lady Bisons make their A-Sun debut at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex on Friday hosting Stetson at 7 p.m.
