MAAC Tips Hat to Riquelme
EDISON, NJ – Following a rare offensive outburst that led his team to victory, Siena Men’s Soccer’s Alejandro Riquelme was named the MAAC Offensive Player of the Week, the conference announced Monday afternoon. Riquelme takes home his first career conference weekly honor and gives the Saints five on the season thus far, their most in a campaign since 2016.
Riquelme needed just six minutes and 52 seconds to record a natural hat trick late in the first half of Siena’s conference-opening win over Canisius on Wednesday, Oct. 2. The junior from Las Rozas Spain scored off a strike in the 34th minute and with help from teammates competed the hat trick with goals in the 36th and 41st minutes. The Saints walked away with a 3-1 win, with Riquelme becoming the first Saint since Emery Welshman in 2010 to net a hat trick and the first Siena player with five or more points in a game since James Beeston in 2013.
Heading into the second conference week of the 2019 season, Riquelme ranks first in the MAAC and tied for third most in the country in assists (6), second in the conference in points (16) and shots (34) and tied for second in goals (5). He is the only MAAC men’s soccer player to record a hat trick thus far this season.
The 2017 MAAC All-Rookie Team selection joins senior Conor McGlynn and sophomores Greg Monroe and Samuel Schwarz in taking home MAAC weekly honors during the 2019 season.
Siena returns to action on Wednesday, Oct. 9 when they travel to West Long Branch, NJ to face conference rival Monmouth at 7:00 p.m.
