MacKenzie Strikes Twice As CC Tops Schreiner
KERRVILLE, Texas – Freshman forward Caden MacKenzie struck for a pair of goals midway through the second half to lift Colorado College to a 2-0 victory at Schreiner University on Friday afternoon at Mountaineer Field.
MacKenzie recorded what proved to be his first game winner in the 69th minute, collecting a pass from junior midfielder Alex Martinez and slipping a shot into the lower left corner.
Just 1:56 later, MacKenzie took a pass from senior forward Brandon Ogilvie, touched the ball through a pair of defenders and tapped it into an open net after goalkeeper Blake Lawson could not maintain control.
One of those tallies was more than enough to give CC the victory, thanks to yet another dominating effort by the Tigers’ back line.
Colorado College held Schreiner to just three total shots, only one of which made it through to sophomore goalkeeper Ian Horne, who recorded his fourth shutout of the season.
“We did not have a satisfactory effort during the first half,” head coach Horst Richardson said. “That changed after a halftime talk. We were more determined in the second half, and once Caden scored the first goal, we had the confidence to play with more vigor.”
The Tigers now have held six of nine opponents to fewer than five shots on goal, including the last four in a row, and have outscored their opponents 9-1 in four conference games this season.
With its fifth consecutive victory, CC improved to 5-2-2 overall and 4-0-0 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference.
Lawson stopped three shots for the Mountaineers, who dropped to 0-8-1 overall and 0-4-0 in league play.
Colorado College concludes its two-game visit to the Longhorn State on Sunday when the Tigers square off with Texas Lutheran University at noon CT.
“You have to put together a complete game if you want to be a contender,” Richardson said. “We expect to have a more competitive game on Sunday.”
