Maganto Nets Game Winner In Gaels Opener
August 26, 2012
GARDEN CITY, NY - Sophomore midfielder Ignacio Maganto's goal in the 71st minute was all the Iona College men's soccer team needed as it opened the 2012 season in fine fashion with a 1-0 win over Adelphi Friday evening at Motamfed Field.
Maganto struck for the go ahead goal off a rebound after Adelphi netminder Ahmad Salamah stopped a shot by senior forward Ansger Otto.
The Gaels outshot Adelphi 23-5, including a 7-1 edge in shots on goal. Maganto led the Gaels with eight shots, while Otto put a team high three shots on goal. The Gaels gained five more corner kicks (7-2) than the Panthers.
Sophomore goalkeeper Borja Barbero made one save to earn his fifth career shutout. Salamah had six saves for Adelphi.
The Gaels return to action on Sunday when they play at home against UC Riverside. Kickoff is slated for 1:00 pm at Mazzella Field.
