LOWELL, Mass. - Two second half goals lead the Marist women’s soccer team (1-1-0) to their first victory of the year Monday night, defeating UMass Lowell (2-2-0) 2-1. In a physical affair that saw Marist down a goal after the first half, the Red Foxes scored an early goal and a late goal in the second half to secure the win.

The first half saw an abundance of shots on goal as Marist tallied seven and UMass Lowell tacked on four. An early breakaway goal in the 20^th minute by Shannon Groffie gave UMass Lowell a lead they would hold for the rest of the first half.

Senior Amanda Epstein (Jericho, N.Y.) scored her first goal of the year in the 51^st minute, just 6 minutes into the second half, to tie the score at 1-1. Epstein secured a loose ball in the box and drove the ball to the right corner of goal. UMass Lowell goalkeeper Jane Hatzikonstantis got a piece of the ball on a dive but couldn’t keep it out of the net.

A late own goal off a mishandle from the goalkeeper in the 80^th minute gave the Red Foxes the advantage and a lead they wouldn’t relinquish.

Senior goalkeeper Andrea Wicks (East Northport, N.Y.) made four saves on the day, two in each half, and earned her first victory of the year in goal. Freshman Christina Lampasi (Hempstead, N.Y.) and sophomore Danielle Glazer (Queens, N.Y.) each recorded two shots apiece.

The Red Foxes return home to take on Cornell on Sunday, Sept. 7 at Tenney Stadium.
