Marist Men’s Soccer Adds Seven Freshmen
POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Marist Men’s Soccer Head Coach Matt Viggiano announced the commitment of seven student-athletes to the program Tuesday. The Class of 2019 includes three from New York, two from Connecticut, one from New Jersey and an international player from Denmark.
“We have a solid class from top to bottom coming in this year,” Viggiano said. “They’ll all fit into our culture as both players and excellent students. There are a lot of impact players and guys who will help our team’s depth.”
Patrick Burke M 5’9” 160 Marlboro, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes/New York Soccer Club
The only local member of the incoming class, Burke was a four-year starter and two-year captain at Our Lady of Lourdes. He earned All-League and All-Section honors in 2013 and 2014 and was named Lourdes’ Soccer Player of the Year in 2013. During his senior year he was selected as a Top Five Player to Watch by the Poughkeepsie Journal and Hudson Valley Sports Report. Burke was also recognized regionally by MSG Varsity as one of 50 Hudson Valley Boys Soccer Players to Watch.
Viggiano on Burke: “Patrick is a hard working, local kid who can come in, represent the program well, and fight for a starting spot.”
Cameron Harr F 5’10” 175 Morris Plains, N.J./Seton Hall Prep/Red Bull NY USSDA
Harr was one of the leading scorers for the top-ranked New York Red Bulls U.S. Development Academy Team in 2014. He was among the top 10 in goals as a junior, scoring 18.
Viggiano on Harr: “Cameron is a guy who finds himself on the end of a lot of scoring opportunities. I’m looking forward to seeing how his scoring ability at the club level translates to the college game.”
Beau Hornberger B/M 6’1” 165 Smithtown, N.Y./St. Anthony’s/Smithtown Arsenal
Hornberger was captain of back-to-back state championship teams for St. Anthony’s High School in 2013 and 2014. He earned All-Long Island recognition in both seasons and was named First Team All-Metro in his senior year. As captain of his club team, Smithtown Arsenal, Hornberger made three appearances in the U.S. Youth Soccer National Championships, winning the title in 2013 and 2014. Smithtown Arsenal was also three-time Eastern New York State Champions and two-time Region I Champions during his playing days.
Viggiano on Hornberger: “As captain of a national championship club team Beau is a proven leader. He’s big, strong, and has some quick feet and I think he’s going to surprise a lot of people.”
Bruce Jeter F/M 6’3” 160 Monroe, N.Y./Monroe-Woodbury/World Class Football Club
Jeter was a two-time team MVP for Monroe-Woodbury High School. He led the Crusaders to consecutive section titles in 2013 and 2014, which were the highest scoring seasons in the program’s history. During his junior and senior seasons Jeter picked up the New York All-Region and All-State Player of the Year awards and was selected as Player of the Year for Section IX. He was one of eight juniors to be named a National Soccer Coaches Association of America First Team All-American in 2013 and also earned the honor his senior year. He has been recognized as an 845 Varsity Player of the Year and MSG Varsity Player of the Year and finished his high school career with 51 goals and 19 assists.
Viggiano on Jeter: “Bruce is a very talented player who has only scratched the surface of what he can do. If he can put all his tools together he will be able to adjust to the collegiate game quickly.”
Simon Lund Jorgensen B/M 6’0” 171 Copenhagen, Denmark/Falkonergardens Gymnasium
Throughout his playing career Jorgensen has been among the elite talent in his native country of Denmark. He won the Danish U19 Cup and received a silver medal in the Danish U19 League in 2014. This past fall Jorgensen was elected Talent of the Year in the Danish Second Division by national soccer online news outlet ligabold.dk. He has been part of the national pool of players for the Danish U15 talent center and U16 National Team. In five seasons playing in international youth tournaments with FC Nordsjaelland he has faced European powerhouses such as AC Milan, Juventus, Tottenham, AS Roma, and West Ham.
Viggiano on Jorgensen: “Simon comes from a very good club in Denmark and has played at a really high level. He’s someone we expect make an impact from day one.”
Jack Monnes M 5’8” 150 West Hartford, Conn./William Hall/FSA United Premier Club
Monnes was a four-year varsity player and two-year captain at William Hall High School in West Hartford, Conn., where he earned All-League and All-Academic League honors for three straight years. During his senior season he led the Central Connecticut Conference in scoring with 23 goals. His coaches voted him to the Connecticut Class LL All-State Team, the NSCAA All-New England Region Team, and the NSCAA All-America Team following the 2014 season. Monnes was also named Hartford Courant Player of the Year and Central Connecticut Conference Player of the Year as a senior. He was recognized as a Top Drawer Soccer Best XI Players to Watch at the 2014 New England TDS College Combine. He was a seven-year starter and captain of FSA United Premier Club.
Viggiano on Monnes: “Jack has a great engine and I consider him a diamond in the rough. He works hard, has a nose for the goal and does some things on the attack that you can’t necessarily teach.”
Alexandre Reis F/M 5’8” 160 West Haven, Conn./Notre Dame HS/Oakwood USSDA
Reis brings five years of Academy League experience to the Red Foxes. He played for South Central Academy and is currently a midfielder on Oakwood Soccer Club in the U.S. Soccer Development Academy League. He played for the Olympic Development Program in his home state of Connecticut and was selected to the regional pool in 2010. Reis has attended four U.S. Market Training Sessions and was a member of his high school varsity team for four years.
Viggiano on Reis: “Alex comes from a solid academy program in Oakwood. He has a good IQ for the game and is creative at midfield. If he can continue to score goals he will have a chance to play right away.”
