Marist Men's Soccer Downs Canisius in OT
BUFFALO, N.Y. – Marist sophomore Dylan MacVane’s overtime strike in the box gave the Red Foxes (6-5-3, 2-3-1 MAAC) a 3-2 road victory over Canisius (7-6-2,2-4-1 MAAC) this afternoon.
The 98th minute game winner came just shy of the end of the first overtime when junior Brian Coyt (Port Chester, N.Y.) sent a cross that split through the box and found MacVane (Middlegrove, N.Y.) about 15 yards from goal.
MacVane proved to be a deciding factor in his first game back from injury as his overtime goal breaks a three game losing streak in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play for the Red Foxes.
“It was big getting him back,” said head coach Matt Viggiano. “Dylan brings a calmness and presence to the team that we really missed.”
Senior MJ Stellwag (Newburgh, N.Y.) opened the scoring for Marist in the 32nd minute with a rocket free kick from 23 yards out. The goal was Stellwag’s first on the season.
After the Red Foxes lone goal in the first half the Griffins answered with an equalizer in the 58th minute of the second half. Canisius’ Asani Samuels scored off a scramble in front of the net as a result of a corner kick.
A feed in the box from junior Connor Flatley (Kearny, N.J.) gave senior Myles Ashong (Pleasant Valley, N.Y.) a free look at net in the 78th minute and a lead the Red Foxes were hoping to hold on to until another Canisius corner kick in the 87th minute tied the game at two and sent the teams to overtime.
Freshman goalkeeper Mark Rajovic (Katonah, N.Y.) came up huge in net again for the Red Foxes making eight saves on the afternoon. The Red Foxes totaled seven shots on goal to Canisius’ 10 shots.
“We showed a lot of character coming off losing in overtime Saturday and finding a way to win tonight,” said Viggiano. “We’re not dead yet.”
The Red Foxes continue their MAAC road stand as they take on Monmouth Saturday, Oct. 25th in West Long Branch, N.J.
