Marist Women's Soccer Drops Season Opener
POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist women's soccer team dropped its season opener on Friday 2-0 to Seton Hall of the Big East Conference at Tenney Stadium. It was the season opener for both teams.
In a physical contest, Seton Hall got on the scoreboard first nearly at the halfway point of the first half. A cross from Amanda Gulli to D’Yonna Riley from left-to-right across the goal put the Pirates up 1-0 at the 22:04 mark. The score remained that way until there were less than 15 minutes to play, when a cross from Sarah Cortes was inadvertently re-directed into the goal to give Seton Hall a 2-0 lead.
Marist Head Coach Katherine Lyn praised the play of seniors Jamie Strumwasser (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) and Amanda Epstein (Jericho, N.Y.). In addition to some solid play in the center back position, Strumwasser had the Red Foxes’ best scoring chance when her shot hit the post with just under five minutes to play. Epstein led the Red Foxes with two shots, one being on goal, and had the team’s best scoring chance in the first half.
Seton Hall held a 5-4 advantage in shots, and a 3-1 edge in corner kicks. Marist senior goalkeeper Andrea Wicks (East Northport, N.Y.) made two saves, and Seton Hall’s Gina Maiorana had one stop.
Marist returns to action on Monday, Sept. 1 at UMass Lowell. The Red Foxes’ next of their 10 home contests will be against Cornell on Sunday, Sept. 7 at 1 p.m.
