Maryland Defeats Orange in Home Finale
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse sophomore Jackie Firenze (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) converted a penalty kick in the 48th minute but it wasn’t enough as Maryland defeated the Orange women’s soccer team, 3-1, in its home finale at the SU Soccer Stadium.
The Terrapins (9-8-0, 5-6-0) took the lead in the 34th minute. A cross into the box went off a Syracuse player and deflected to Aubrey Baker outside the box. She put her shot in the back of the net to put Maryland up 1-0. The Orange (7-10-1, 3-8-1) answered in the 48th minute after a Terrapins’ defender took down a Syracuse player in the box. Firenze converted the penalty kick to even the score at 1-1.
Maryland took the lead for good in the 56th minute. Ashley Spivey played a through ball to Hayley Brock, who chipped the ball over SU goalkeeper Brittany Anghel (East Meadow, N.Y.) for her 10th goal of the year. The Orange continued to apply offensive pressure, but couldn’t take advantage of its opportunities.
The Terrapins added an insurance goal in the 68th minute when a corner kick was played back to Shannon Collins, who served the ball in the box. She connected with Kristen Schmidbauer, who headed the ball into the right corner of the goal.
“Maryland was very potent in front of the goal and we were not,” said Syracuse head coach Phil Wheddon. “We had some great opportunities to score and we didn’t.”
The Terrapins outshot Syracuse, 9-5, while both teams earned three corner kicks. Anghel finished with three saves, leaving her just three shy of 300 in her career. She would become the second goalkeeper in school history to reach the milestone. Rachelle Beanlands had one save for Maryland.
Syracuse closes out the season next Thursday at Boston College. Opening kick is set for 4 p.m.
