Mattsson's Goal Gives UMass Win Vs. Siena
The UMass women's soccer team wrapped up its non-conference schedule on Sunday afternoon with a 1-0 win over Siena at Rudd Field for the squad's third victory in the past four contests. With Atlantic 10 play opening on Friday, the Minutewomen currently sit at 5-5-0 on the season after snapping the Saints' (4-5-0) four-game winning streak.
UMass controlled the bulk of the possession in the opening half and went into the intermission with an 8-4 shot advantage. Sophomore Moa Mattsson had the best opportunity of the period as she dribbled into the box in the 35th minute, but her attempt at goal trickled just wide of the right post. Junior Jen Houtmann then put a shot on target in the 43rd minute, which was grabbed by Siena goalkeeper Taylor Booth to preserve the scoreless deadlock at the half.
Persistence paid off for the Minutewomen in the 64th minute, though. Following a corner kick, senior Jess Howe served the ball back into the box after an attempted clear by the Saints, finding the feet of sophomore Alyssa D'Arcy. D'Arcy tapped the ball over to Mattsson, who chipped it past Booth for her fifth tally on the year.
Senior Emily Cota collected five saves en route to her third shutout of the season and 19th of her career, tying Kelly Tuller (1978-80) for the No. 5 mark in the UMass record book. Booth finished with three stops as Siena was out-shot, 14-12 in the contest. Corner kicks were even at four apiece, while fouls were 12-9 against the Minutewomen.
UMass will continue its four-game homestand this coming Friday, Sept. 28, opening Atlantic 10 action vs. Dayton at 4 p.m. The contest will be a rematch of the 2011 Atlantic 10 Championship game.
