Mauro Bravo Named MAAC Rookie Of The Week
EDISON, NJ – The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference announced its weekly men's soccer awards on Monday afternoon. Freshman Mauro Bravo of the Iona College men's soccer program has been named the MAAC Rookie of the Week.
Bravo continued his stellar season with two strong outings against Northeast Conference opponents Fairleigh Dickinson and Sacred Heart. Against the Knights, Bravo recorded one goal and one assist as part of a 3-1 win. His goal came on his lone shot of the game, a free kick in the 23'. Bravo lined out the right side of the box of goal, roughly 20 yards out. He took his shot and had it rocket off the crossbar, off the Knight keeper, and into the back of the net.
While his goal was the eventual game-winner, Bravo also assisted on the Maroon & Gold's first score. He took a corner for the right side and put it toward the far post. There sophomore Tomas Jamett took a leaping kick and buried his first collegiate goal.
Bravo ranks second on the Gaels in points (5), goals (2) and assists (1). Has the second best shot on goal percentage (.222) among those with a minimum eight shots.
Iona's next game is its first MAAC contest against the Rider Broncs on Wednesday, Sept. 26. The Maroon & Gold kickoff in Lawrenceville, NJ at 7 PM.
