TURNING POINT
Boston College took the lead early as senior Hayley Dowd scored her sixth goal of the season five minutes into the game.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Eagles offense was active early as Hayley Dowd had a header just two minutes in go wide. Her second shot found the back of the goal in the fifth minute to give BC a 1-0 lead. Dowd headed in a long ball from Samantha Hiatt into the near post for her sixth goal of the season. The Eagles earned the set piece as a Pitt defender dropped Andrea O’Brien 35 yards away from the goal.
- BC goalkeeper Erin Seppi kept the Eagles up 1-0 on a strong play in the box. Seppi came out and made a point blank on Sarah Krause in the 10th minute of play from just four yards out.
- The Eagles freshman Jenna Bike almost gave BC a two goal lead in the 46thminute. She broke down the sideline and sent a right-footed shot towards the goal and it went off the far post. The defense cleared the rebound out of the box to keep the game, BC 1-0.
- The rookie would strike in the 52nd minute to give BC a 2-0 lead. Bike one-timed a pass from Gaby Carreiro from eight yards out for her fourth goal of the season. Berman sent Carreiro down the sideline and her cross found Bike in the middle of the box. Bike just one-timed the ball by the Pitt keeper Taylor Francis to extend the Eagles lead.
- In the 66th minute, Pittsburgh had a great chance on a cross from Christiana Davey. The ball skidded across the box and Carreiro deflected the ball out of the goal mouth to preserve the shutout for the Eagles.
- Meehan came into the game in the 75th minute and broke the record in the 83rdminute on a spectacular goal. Leipzig connected with Carreiro down the line. Carreiro sent a low line drive into the box, and Meehan dove and headed the ball to the near post for the record-breaking two points.
COACH FOLEY
On McKenzie Meehan’s …
“McKenzie’s diving header goal to break the scoring record was nothing short of spectacular which summarizes her career.’’
On the overall performance of the team …
“I think it’s really important (to score early). You want a goal in the first ten minutes and sometimes lull the team if you get it early. I think we kind of got into second gear there but I thought in the second half we picked it back up.’’
“We are in a really, really good place. We are playing a lot of players and the depth is really good. At times our speed of play might need to be a little faster throughout the midfield. I think we are really talented in wide positions and can get around just about anyone in the country but we want to make sure we get the ball into those wide channels to play to our strengths.’’
