Mendoza Named Men's Soccer All-MAAC
EDISON, NJ – The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference announced the 2017 Men's soccer All-MAAC selections and major award winners on Tuesday evening. Senior Luis Mendozacaps off his Iona career being named as a midfielder All-MAAC First Team honoree.
Mendoza is joined on the first team by fellow midfielders Melvin Blair of Canisius, alongside Jose Aguinaga and Emmanuel Kouma of Rider.
The Gael captain led the Maroon & Gold with four assists and 44 shots this season. He finished the 2017 season with 13 shots on goal, second-most on the team. Mendoza earned two helpers at Monmouth (Oct. 4) and had one assist on back-to-back games against Niagara (Oct. 21) and Rider (Oct. 25).
The Wayne, NJ native finishes his career ranking top-10 in Iona men's soccer history in shots attempted (114) and minutes played (5,355). His seven shots in a single-game against Monmouth and then nationally ranked Old Dominion (Sept. 3) is tied for the sixth most over the past three seasons.
The major award winners are highlighted Allen Gavilanes of Marist College was is the 2017 MAAC Men's Soccer Offensive Player of the Year and MAAC Rookie of the Year. Alex Grattarola of Canisius College is the 2017 MAAC Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Year and sophomore keeper Marcellin Gohier of Manhattan is the 2017 MAAC Goalkeeper of the Year.
