Men's Soccer Earns Road MAAC Win Vs. Siena
LOUDONVILLE, NY – The Iona College men's soccer team earned its first MAAC win of the season Saturday afternoon. The Gaels took down Siena 2-0 with junior Humbert Ferrer netting the game-winner in the 56th minute.
Ferrer's strike was the first of the season and his first since his freshman season. Junior Sebastian Gordillo assisted on the goal, his third helper of the season.
Freshman Lenworth Lopez scored his first collegiate goal in the 82nd minute. The rookie took advantage of a miscue on the Siena backline, taking a loose ball and finishing unabated.
The defensive backline of Ferrer, senior Joshua Calderon, sophomore Malcolm Moreno, and freshman Tomas Jamett did not allow a single shot on net throughout the ninety minutes. Junior Kellar Sirstinsis credited with the shutout, his second of the season and first since the season-opener against No. 24 UConn.
Junior Killian Colombie had a team-high six shots and three shots on goal. Senior Matias Correa and Lopez each had three total shots.
The Gaels only subbed one player with junior Aristotle Seferlis coming off the bench to play 11 minutes.
Iona had offensive control throughout the game. The Maroon & Gold outshot the Saints 17 to 6 and they had an edge in corner kick chances, 6 to 2. Freshmen Andreas Rosnes and Alejandro Riquelme each had a team-high two shots for Siena.
Iona returns to action on Wednesday, Oct. 4 with a trip to West Long Branch, NJ for a battle against Monmouth. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 PM. The game is available on WATCHESPN.
