Men's Soccer Falls 2-1 to Army
Box Score
Garden City, N.Y. – Earlier this evening, the men's soccer team took on the Black Knights of West Point. In what looked like it would be a game heading into overtime, it was the visitors who notched the game winner as time expired to steal the 2-1. With the loss, Adelphi drops to 1-11 while Army moves to 3-7-1.
The Panthers wasted no time, attacking right off the start in the opening minutes when they were awarded a free kick from just a few yards out from the right corner of the box. Taken by Nicholas Costa, he connected with Omar Edwards who fired his first shot back from being injured after three weeks, but was stopped by Army keeper, Winston Boldt.
However, Army was the first to strike; and it came on their first attempt of the game. Josh Koeppe managed to take the ball away from the Adelphi defense down near the right side of the goal line, juked left and sent a low shot that found the back left side of the net to give the Black Knights an early 1-0 lead.
The Panthers had another opportunity in the 12th minute when a yellow card given to Army's Cameron Niccum resulting in a free kick for the Brown and Gold just five yards behind the right side of the box. Taken by Costa, his shot sailed over the West Point wall but right into the hands of the keeper.
Adelphi leveled the playing field in the 27th minute on a play set up by Costa. After leading Edwards up field on a long pass, the senior cut the ball off from going out of bounds and sent a low cross in front of the net where he connected with a streaking Chris Joseph on a slide shot into the net for his second goal of the game.
The physical affair continued in the second and shifted from an offensive ended game to a defensive melee. Army had their best chance to score the go ahead goal in the 61st minute when Michael Kim blasted a shot from around 10 yards out, but his attempt sailed just high off the mark.
Less than three minutes later, on a near identical play down on the other end of the field, Edwards had a similar shot but his mark went wide right of the net.
The score remained knotted at 1-1. However, with less than 30 seconds remaining, the Black Knights raced up field, penetrated the Panther defense and managed to score the game winner thought traffic in the box just as time expired. The goal was credited to Jordan Lee with the assist coming from Parker Dixon.
Army held a 15-13 shot advantage but Adelphi led in corners, 7-4. Ahmad Salamah and his Black Knight counterpart each made three saves in the loss.
The Panthers are back in action on Wednesday, October 17 when they host the Tigers of Princeton University. You can follow the game with live stats or watch it on www.aupanthers.tv.
