Men’s Soccer Falls To Essex County In Opener
BROCKTON, Mass. ---- The Massasoit men’s soccer team fell to Essex County, 4-0, on Saturday to open the 2014 campaign on the renovated Warrior Field at the Brockton campus.
Following the ribbon cutting ceremony in which Massasoit President Charles Wall and Athletics Director Julie Mulvey addressed the crowd, the two teams squared off on the new surface.
Massasoit (0-1) had chances early on as Pepe Vieira (Brockton) fired a shot high in the third minute of action. Teammate Joel Lobo (Brockton) also shook an Essex County defender but his shot went wide.
Unfortunately for the home squad, the visiting Wolverines would go on to score three first half goals, the first two coming off the foot of forward Dominic Harrington.
In the second half, Massasoit again produced a few opportunities offensively, including another shot by Lobo, but the Essex County keeper made a great stop to keep the Warriors scoreless.
Essex County tacked on a fourth goal in the 89th minute of action to round out the scoring.
Lobo and Vieria finished tied for team-high honors with four shots each.
In goal, Andre Reis (Fall River) finished with five saves, four coming in the second half.
The Warriors return to action on Monday, hosting MassBay CC at 4 p.m.
