Men's Soccer Opens Up Conference Play With A 1-0 Victory; Extend Win Streak To Six Straight
EMMITSBURG, Maryland--- Senior tri-captain Robbie Weir's goal in the 27th minute proved to be the difference as the St. Francis College men's soccer team opened up Northeast Conference action with a 1-0 victory against the Mount St. Mary's Mountaineers on Sunday afternoon in Emmitsburg, Maryland.
For the Terriers, they improve to 6-2-1 and pick up their first conference victory while the Mount falters to 4-4-1 and 0-1 in the Northeast Conference. St. Francis increases their winning streak to six straight while also winning by one-goal in each of the last six games.
When asked about the victory, coach Tom Giovatto stated that “we are happy to start the conference season off with a win. Mount St. Mary's is a very good team. They have a couple of excellent players and our defense did a great job in keeping them off the board.”
St. Francis was awarded a free-kick after a Mountaineer foul in the 27th minute. Weir, known for his ability to bend the ball, blasted the shot from thirty yards out, over a leaping Peter Steve's reach to give the Terriers the 1-0.
For the native of Prestwick, Scotland, it is his first goal of the season, his sixth in his career and his second straight goal against the Mountaineers.
“I am happy that we got off to a strong start in conference play,” says Weir. “To win on the road is tough but we were able to capitalize on our opportunities and we look to continue to progress as a team.”
“It was good for Robbie to get a goal,” said Giovatto. “He excels on set-pieces.”
For the match, junior goalie Tyler Clarhaut finished the match with eight saves, recording five in the first half. The Mount out-shot St. Francis by a 13-7 advantage.
The Terriers will be on the road as they travel up to Smithfield, Rhode Island to square off against Bryant University on Wednesday, October 7th. Kick-off is slated for 3:00 pm.
