Men's soccer rolls to 7-1 victory over Rhodes
It only took the Centre men's soccer team three minutes to score its first goal, and it was a sign of things to come as the Colonels cruised to a 7-1 win over Rhodes in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference game Friday in Danville, Ky.
Josh Settle (Bowling Green, Ky.) scored two goals, Austin Hall (Indianapolis, Ind.) had a goal and two assists, Robbe Tarver (Houston, Tex.) had a goal and an assist and Ryan Garvey (Louisville, Ky.) added two assists as the Centre offense found its rhythm early and kept it most of the night.
It was just three minutes in when Tarver lined up for a free kick just outside the box and found Jeremy Carlson (Seattle, Wash.) for a header and the game's first goal. Five minutes later, Garvey assisted Settle on another score to make it 2-0.
The score remained 2-0 at the half, but just three minutes into the second half, Hall played a ball through the Rhodes defense which set up Settle for another goal. Three minutes later, Hall got a goal of his own off a cross from Ryan Garvey, making the score 4-0 and tying Hall and Settle for the team lead in goals with nine.
The Colonels continued to increase the margin, getting a fifth goal when Austin Greer (Bowling Green, Ky.) scored on an assist from goalkeeper Chris Jackson (Oxford, Ohio), who had booted the ball to the top of the Rhodes box. Centre got its sixth goal when Will Frentz (Louisville, Ky.) fired a shot over the head of Rhodes keeper Chandler Schneider off an assist from Hall. The Colonels later capped their scoring on a free kick from Tarver in the 78th minute.
With time running down, Jonathan Fisher scored the only goal of the night for Rhodes.
Centre outshot Rhodes 15-10 in the game while Rhodes held a 6-1 dege in corners. Jackson made three saves in goal for Centre before giving way to Zach Sosnovich (Woodbridge, N.J.), who had two saves, including a diving stop on a penalty kick. Schneider made three saves for Rhodes.
Centre improves to 10-3-2 overall on the season with a 4-1-1 mark in the SCAC while Rhodes falls to 3-9-2 on the year with a 2-4-1 conference record. Centre is back on the pitch for its final home game of the year when it hosts Millsaps at 2 p.m.
