Men's soccer sinks Earlham 1-0 in double overtime
Only 1.2 seconds away from finishing in a tie, senior forward Austin Hall (Indianapolis, Ind.) scored the lone goal of the match in the second overtime period to give Centre a 1-0 win over Earlham College Sunday, Sept. 18 in Richmond, Ind.
The Colonels have now won three straight matches, and improve to 4-2 overall, while Earlham remains winless and falls to 0-6.
The two teams battled back and forth through the first two periods with Centre holding a 14-8 edge in shots, while the Quakers had twice as many corner kicks (10-5) as the Colonels.
Following a scoreless first overtime period, Hall hit the back of the net at the 109:58 mark for his second goal of the weekend and sixth overall this season to give Centre the 1-0 win. Hall is now averaging 1.0 goals per game this season.
"This is one of the most emotionally gratifying games I have witnessed," Centre head coach Jeb Burch said. In my 22 years involved with this program, I honestly feel we have not gotten many breaks."
"It was frustrating for our guys today in many ways. The field has taken a major disease and is in awful shape. The official interpreted the game in many ways that we did not agree with and by halftime, we scrapped our entire game play and just went direct," Burch continued.
The Colonels finished with a 20-11 advantage in shots, while Earlham led 11-6 in corner kicks. Senior Chris Jackson earned his second shutout victory of the weekend in goal for Centre. Jackson stopped three shots on the day.
I am proud my boys had the resolve to play a working game and if you saw our boys right up to the end and score with 1.2 seconds left! Unbelievable moment for these guys.
The Colonels will return home Tuesday, Sept. 20 to host Thomas More College. The non-conference match is set to start at 7 p.m. in Danville, Ky.
