Men’s Soccer Stifled by Saint Peter’s
JERSEY CITY, NJ – Despite playing a man down for the final 72 minutes of the day, Siena Men’s Soccer (5-12, 2-7) held onto a late match lead before ultimately falling in overtime to 2019 MAAC Regular Season Champion Saint Peter’s Saturday afternoon. The Peacocks strung together two goals in the final 18 minutes of the game to take a 2-1 overtime win at Jaroschak Field in Jersey City, NJ.
Closing out its 2019 road slate, the Saints held an early 3-1 lead in shots before being forced to hold their own with 10 men on the field due to a red card being issued to leading scorer Alejandro Riquelme in the 26th minute.
The Green and Gold had already taken an early 1-0 lead at that point in the match, with freshman Gylfi Gestsson connecting on a free kick from outside the box for his second goal of the season.
Led by the top scoring offense in the league, the Peacocks held a 25-8 advantage in the shots, including 12-3 in te second half. Nevertheless, Siena’s defense, led by sophomore goalkeeper Greg Monroe’s eight saves, was able to keep a clean sheet until the 80th minute.
The Peacocks knotted the contest at one goal apiece thanks to a feed from Dominic Laws to Jordan Jowers that connected in the low right of the goal. The score took the Saints to their second straight and fourth total overtime appearance in 2019, which was ended with golden goal from Frederik Linqvist in the 98th minute.
Senior Conor McGlynn and freshman Tyler Swanbeck steadied the Saints offensively with two shots apiece, while four other Saints made attempts.
Siena will close out its 2019 regular season with one final home match next Wednesday, November 6. The Saints will face Manhattan at Hickey Field, with kickoff slated for 2:00 p.m.
