There were only four competitive games last week as the extremely small men’s Division I soccer season began.

With most teams opting to wait until spring to attempt to play a season, the ACC is the main thrust behind the 2020 fall campaign. But a few programs as going ahead, and the quartet of games yielded several standout efforts to come together in the first Team of the Week.

And it was a big-time goal scorer from a year ago that nabs the first Player of the Week award. With the Sun Belt Conference the other league playing during the COVID-19 pandemic, Georgia State Aris Briggs was on the double, leading his side to a 2-1 win against Mercer on Friday night.

Men’s Team of the Week: September 14-20

GK Keagan McLaughlin, Notre Dame: Prior to this season, McLaughlin has made three appearances in the first three years of his eligibility. Making a fourth start in four years, he made four stops in UND’s 1-0 win against Kentucky.

D Sekou Soumah, South Carolina: Making his first appearance in college soccer, Soumah played the full 90 minutes as the Gamecocks blanked Georgia Southern by a 2-0 score.

D Reese Mayer, Notre Dame: After not appearing in a match last fall, Mayer started and played 90 minutes in front of McLaughlin, helping to preserve the 1-0 win.

D Alex Henderson, Georgia State: It was a strong performance from Henderson at the back. Along with a 97% pass completion mark (on 64 attempts), he won 79% of his challenges and made eight interceptions.

D Edoardo Calzola, Central Arkansas: Calzola put in a 95-minute shift as Central Arkansas lost by a 3-2 score. The defender temporarily gave his side a 3-2 lead in the 52nd minute, but UAB would strike two more times on the evening.

M Aiden McFadden, Notre Dame: The senior helped steer the Irish to an opening win against Kentucky, as his set piece delivery found substitute Daniel Russo for the game’s only goal.

M Joseph Buete, UAB: It was an incredibly efficient evening for UAB, which beat Central Arkansas by a 3-2 score on Saturday. The team got three shots off, and scored on all three. Buete scored two of them, giving the Blazers their first victory in a 10-game schedule.

M Justin Guest, Georgia State: Playing 66 minutes against Mercer, Guest helped engineer his side’s first goal. He led the team in chances created (3) and tied for first with key passes (2). He completed 86% of 28 passes.

F Trevor Martineau, Mercer: Martineau temporarily tied the game in the second half, scoring his side’s only goal in a 2-1 loss.

F Brian Banahan, South Carolina: A goal and assist from Banahan supplied the bulk of the offense for the Gamecocks in their win.

F Aris Briggs, Georgia State: If there’s one thing that Briggs knows how to do, it’s finish chances. He made sure to put two in the back of the net, picking up where he left off in 2019.

Honorable Mention: F Daniel Russo (Notre Dame), GK Paul Tyson (Georgia State), M Kevin Kim (Mercer), F Logan Frost (South Carolina)
